Partner and Project Description

This is an annual bilateral project involving two Organizations in Tanzania and Kenya. (UVIKIUTA and GVDA) For the second year we are organizing this project after the successful stories from last year. In Tanzania the project will be the project is been organized in Partnership with Vigoa local youth and women groups, faith based groups and local authorities. In Kenya the project will be hosted Near Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya. The focus of the project is to provide an opportunity for both communities as well Participants to understand and contribute to the environmentalsustainability.

 

Project Activities

This is the project of 4 weeks rotating within two Eastern African Countries (Tanzania & Kenya). The first two weeks will be in Kenya and then move to Tanzania for the final two weeks. (Kenya dates: 15ndto 28thAugust, Tanzania dates 17th to 29th August 2016). Based on the four components of the program (Orientation, Community services, cultural exchange, Development/global education) participants of this project will participate in a number of activities related to environmental sustainability in Tanzania and Kenya. In both phases Participants will be involved with the community members to measure the Impacts of Climate change and global warming, tree planting, landscaping, collecting garbage, and cleaning. More activities will include; establishments of Community Tree Nursery, provision of seedlings and seeds for planting in numerous sites collaborations with other stakeholders. Waste management and clean ups campaigns for community health, Precaution to Water pollution, degraded zones & encroached catchment’s areas. Participants will support as well on Conservation data collection, community mobilization, awareness and trainings.

 

GVDA Kenya Volunteers Activities in oloisukut conservancy Maasai Mara

Training students on importance ofenvironmental conservation, tree nursery site preparation, identification, of trees which can survive in the area, Potting, Seeding, watering on daily basis, weeding, transplantation

 

Organized involving participants of the project, community members and visited places. The major topic will be Environmental Conservation, please bring information from your home community for sharing and leveling the ground landscaping

We showcase the Maasai cultural activities, we have manhattans bomas,  our women doing beadwork ,our system of slaughtering and meat eating in places famously known as orpul Maasai  dance and  so on.

Accommodation

Participants are expected to be hosted in local host families within the community. However depending on the availability of the families, in some cases Participants will be sharing accommodation in common accommodation. In the case where participants will be on group living rooms will be shared with 3-5 Participants and available full time kitchen staff to manage meals preparation. Participants will be encouraged to give hand in meals preparations.

Volunteers will be hosted with the host family food, water and electricity are available, and Volunteers will stay in host families. Accommodations are very simple, there is running water, and meals will be prepared by volunteers. Beds and Mattresses will be provided. Volunteer to carry; mosquito nets, sleeping bag, a pillow and water purifying tablets, playing cards, and tents are (optional) not necessary.

Volunteers Skills and Interests

Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient motivated to learn about conservation, to work with children and adults and ability to speak English.

Project Fees

€250 Non-refundable participation fee to be paid to GVDA-Kenya on arrival day and the same amount to be paid to UVIKIUTA for the last two weeks. (Not the program is 2 weeks in each Country) Participation fee does not cover medical/health services, cost of relevant Visas or permits, Airport pick up and drop off, pocket money, free/leisure activities,, transfer between the countries/communities and other personal expenses. However it does cover the cost orientation on arrival, local transport to the project, food and accommodation during the program. The fee also contributes to the running cost of program activities before, during and after the program.

Orientation

Orientation will begin in the morning of the 1st August 2018 at GVDA offices  and you will be picked up from accommodation and taken to the orientation will be conducted by GVDA staff in Nairobi and cover everything you need to know about your project placement .Introduction to Kenya and Luhya land,Luhya customs, language training, routes and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Kenya, introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing, once orientation is complete.

Leisure activities

 

In Kenya possibilities are hiking to Longoti Mountain, Hells’ Gate national Park, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru national Park, Maasai Mara, and Cultural tourism along Maasai communities. In Tanzania phase the project is located in the outskirts of Dares Salaam, the community which still maintain its natural beauty in comparing to the rest of the region. There is possibility of night walk to watch bush babies, meeting a large population of monkey in the morning and afternoons, bird watching among other. During weeks ends there is a good number excursion options including visiting Kilwa Mask &Bagamoyo historical sites (UNESCO's world heritage site); National & Village museums in Dar Es Salaam, Cultural tour in Dar Es Salaam thatwill include fish Market, Kariakor Market, sight seen and Beach/Swimming. There is also a possibility for two days and one day Safari to Mikumi National Park as well over night in Zanzibar
