Description: SCI Poland has been closely co-operating with Monar for 20+ years. Monar is the largest Polish NGO dealing predominantly with drug addiction. It runs 30 rehabilitation centres in different parts of Poland, 5 of them specialising in youth counselling. The centre in Wyszków is situated 50 km from Warsaw, by the river in a small, quiet town, among fields and forests. There are approximately 30 people residing in Wyszków, between 18-30 years of age. The patients come from different backgrounds and different parts of Poland, and they live together in the centre during a one year therapy.

Type of Work: The main task of volunteers is to interact and socialise with the community, by supporting them in their everyday work (gardening, cleaning, working in the kitchen, etc.) and taking active part in leisure activities with them. Games, camp-fires, sports activities, workshops with/for the residents will bring fresh energy and relaxation to the centre. Depending on your willingness, you can also join the patients to visit children in the sociotherapy centre. It is possible that for a few days during the workcamp volunteers will go with the patients and therapists on a camping trip to the area near the sea/lakeside, where they will have a chance to do some canoeing.

Study Theme: Issues related to drug addiction and substance abuse and life during anti-drug therapy. Volunteers will have a chance to learn about overcoming addiction and they will also learn alternative ways of life, embracing a more social and community-oriented approach.

Accommodation: The permises of the centre. Volunteers will sleep in one or two rooms.

Language: English, Polish

Requirements: Volunteers must remember about sensitivities of the facility and the regulations in place. Alcohol and illicit substance use is strictly prohibited, even outside the centre, meaning that you must not show up at the centre having consumed some alcohol any conversations about alcohol or any substance use would be considered insensitive.
