RECOVERY OF THE ASCASO FOOTPATHS | SVI-AR04 | 2024-07-15 - 2024-07-29 | CONS,ENVI,MANU | Age: 18 - 30

Asociación de Vecinos-as y Amigos-as de Ascaso “Los Relojes”. This organisation has been working for almost 20 years to recover the village of Ascaso and its community life. Its best known activity is the Ascaso Film Festival (www.cineascaso.org) but it has carried out numerous campaigns and activities to recover the village. More information at www.ascaso.jimdo.com.

Work: The initiative covers several phases, including the cleaning and clearing of the paths, the restoration of the trellised walls using traditional dry-stone techniques, and the restoration of traditional elements such as gates and curbstones. In addition, the replanting of autochthonous flora to consolidate the side land and the creation and installation of information panels, from Monday to Friday mornings, are also envisaged. The replacement of walls will be assisted by an official mason from the Boltaña Town Council, who will provide on-site instructions on the selection, placement, fitting and proper positioning of the stones. As for the replacement of flora, small gardening tools will be used to plant native species in the form of small seedlings, strengthening and consolidating the land. This comprehensive approach seeks to revitalise the paths, preserve the cultural and natural heritage of Ascaso, and encourage community participation in the recovery process.

Accomodation and food: The team of volunteers will be installed in 5 tents (purchased and set up by the organisation) for 4 people per tent in an area set up for this purpose. The showers and toilets are the modules already in place for the Ascaso Film Festival: A toilet module with washbasins and toilets (prefabricated approved hut) installed by the City Council and a cabin with 3 newly refurbished individual showers with hot water and washbasin. An outdoor kitchen will be installed as a kitchen, equipped for large meals, kitchenware included. Gluten Free, Vegetarian and Vegan options available.

Location and Leisure: Ascaso, a Pyrenean village located in the municipality of Boltaña, experienced a period of semi-abandonment between the 1960s and 1990s, being inhabited by only one family. Consisting of 7 houses, a pardina, a church and numerous "bordas", it is notable for its popular architectural heritage, including 19th century mural sundials. Although in the past it had footpaths, access to Ascaso has been limited since 1992, as these have practically disappeared under the vegetation. Surrounded by nature and located a few kilometres from the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, Ascaso offers a picturesque and unique setting in Alto Aragón. With the aim of generating meeting spaces in an educational leisure environment that fosters group cohesion, various activities have been planned, especially at weekends. Visit to the Ordesa National Park: Walking tour to the Cola de Caballo. Visit to the twinned town of Saint Lary: Practice of sports activities in nature. Party with young people from Boltaña and other summer activities. Attendance at the Boltaña Cinema: Screening of films of interest to the group at weekends. Evening gatherings: Evening gatherings around a fire or similar structure (special permission from the forest ranger will be required for fires). These activities seek to enrich the experience of the participants, promoting cultural and natural knowledge, as well as strengthening community ties through playful and recreational moments.
